Julian is one of the core developers of the OpenFlexure Microscope. He is also the Chief Executive of the Humanitarian Technology Trust (HTT), a UK Charity that is focused on advancing open-source humanitarian technology through local manufacturing. Julian's focus in the open source movement is on open source scientific instrumentation, and automated open source workflows for hardware development and documentation. In his spare time he maintains a 200 year old waterwheel that powers the second oldest beam engine in the world that can still do its original job.

Microscopy for Everyone: The OpenFlexure Microscope

Microscopy is an essential technology. Microscopy supports medical diagnostics, public health, soil analysis, biodiversity monitoring, scientific research, quality control for food and drink production. We ask the question: "What if everyone had access to microscopy?" Not just to use a microscope they can buy, but a microscope they can build, hack, improve, and deploy for any purpose they need. The OpenFlexure Microscope is just that, it is a fully open-source, automated, digital, robotic microscope. All custom mechanical components for OpenFlexure are 3D printed, which has enabled our community to build and use the microscope in over 70 countries. This talk will explore the open source project, our future goals, and incredible project from our diverse community.
